Whistler University plan shot down by town council

Whistler UniversityTo the town council it sounded like a firm "no" when the vote was taken, but to project advocate Doug Player, his plans for a 30-million-dollar university are still just working out the bugs.

Citing a need to diversify Whistler's economy, proponents have waged a steady battle to place the campus on part of a 77-acre section of wetlands called the Alpha Creek area. Currently, that portion is zoned for more housing.

Proponents argue that few destination ski towns host a four-year university, and in the search for market differentiation, Whistler would continue to separate itself from most North American alpine communities. Those opposing the plan say the vote has been taken, time to move on.
